More big news! I’ve been chosen as the California Representative for the HUGS Program, by Friends Like Us.
The Cliffnotes: We deliver handmade cards to children’s hospitals to brighten a child’s day.
What is the Friends Like Us HUGS Program? The “hugs” part of our program is delivering hand-made greeting cards to children diagnosed with cancer in hospitals or cancer clinics in need of support. We feel they are getting a hug when they open up a card and the smile illuminates on their face. We want to be there to show them that they are not alone because someone does really care. What might seem like just a greeting card to us could be the very thing that brightens up their spirit and puts a smile on their face. That is reason enough to deliver hand-made greeting cards to every child with cancer.
Creative ways people will make cards:
A. Card parties! Invite people over to help make a night of helping others.
B. Talk to your kids’ school in getting kids involved.
C. Make family night card making night
D. Contact local youth groups; churches, synagogues, after school programs, day cares
E. Start a; Cards for Kids Cancer Drive
Be creative, but remember to stay positive and encourage a child. We have found that funny cards really bring a big smile. Try it and let us know how you are doing with the program. Thank you for your help and making a difference in a child’s life with cancer. You are the sunshine that is going to brighten up their day.
I am so incredibly excited about this! Today I was chosen as one of the Kids Are Heroes Ambassadors. As a mom, children’s charities are close to my heart. And as someone who has been volunteering for 24 years, I know how important and fulfilling volunteering can be. With or without recognition, you feel that huge sense of accomplishment.
My bio on the site:
“Heather is a mom to 3, crafter, longtime volunteer, wedding assistant, publisher of A Work Of Heart (a charity zine), & owner of Brianne’s Basics. Her family’s team started by her son, Mikk’s Kid Krusaders, participates in local charity events. She plans on using her charity experience and crafting skills to help Kids Are Heroes and raise money, as well as speaking to Southern California schools and organizations.”
And what is the Ambassador program? “Kids Are Heroes is looking for passionate people who would like to be a part of something world-changing. Help us grow the organization so we can reach more and more kids and families. As an ambassador you will use your talents to boost our visibility and in return you wil be rewarded with the satisfaction that you are taking part in something that comes around once in a lifetime. (Not to mention the fact that you will be listed with other ambassadors on our Ambassadors Page and promoted regularly to our sphere.)
To be an ambassador we do not ask too much of your time, just your energy and passion for our organization. We are seeking out our “true fans” so that when you speak to others about Kids Are Heroes the passion is contagious. As an ambassador, we will ask you to help in areas where you feel you would match up best, and/or in areas where you would like to be. All of these are optional, but at minimum we would like you to help us spread the word about what we are doing to as many people you can.”

Bears On Patrol is a fabulous organization that donates teddy bears to local law enforcement departments.
"The idea for Bears on Patrol started in November of 2008 when I realized that the teddy bears that we sell at Blake's Sublime Designs have so many possible uses. To explain the program very simply, we provide free teddy bears for police officers to use in any situations where small children are involved. Psychological studies have proven that stuffed animals have a significant calming effect on children in stressful or traumatic circumstances.
We need your help to get teddy bears into the hands of police officers who would love to use them, and to educate others about what we are doing. You can start by telling all of your friends about us, and helping us spread the word with our application and cause on Facebook. We are also hoping to be launching an application on Myspace as well."
An ordinary teddy bear named Miles will be making an extraordinary journey around the United States starting Monday, May 10th. His voyage of approximately 8,500 miles, covering nine states, will raise awareness for Bears on Patrol, an organization that provides teddy bears for police departments. The departments use these bears to help comfort children in traumatic or stressful situations. The scheduled stops include:
Southampton, MA ~ Greensboro, NC ~ Charlotte, FL ~ Lakewood, CA ~ Aurora, IL ~ Goshen, IN ~ Washington Court House, OH ~ Philadelphia, PA ~ Fernley, NV
“It is really a simple gesture that can make a huge difference,” said Blake Raab the organization’s executive director. “We have already seen several of our bears go to family members of homicide victims in Philadelphia. Our goal with this promotion is to let people know that we are here and that they can help, without spending any money in some cases.”
Bears on Patrol is a 501(c)3 organization that was founded in 2009. They can be found online at www.BearsOnPatrol.org. The journey of Miles the Traveling Bear can be tracked at www.bearsonpatrol.org/miles
